How Do You Beat the Summer Heat???

Thu Jul 3, 2008, 6:17 PM
Anyone got any good tips? My mornings, now that it seems rainy season has passed, start with 90 degree heat at 8am, and the sun pounding right through our glass doors into the main room. We also live on the top floor of our building, so the heat bakes the roof and makes this place an unbearable oven. No, in a case like this, heat DOESN'T rise...It comes right down through the ceiling. We couldn't survive these days without AC...

So what do YOU do to fight the heat? Any tricks for staying cool while trying to keep electric bills down?

The best thing I can contribute is to make sure to keep yourself hydrated, and eat a lot of cool summer veggies, either plain or with a light lemon/olive oil vinaigrette. Just...Make sure you don't refrigerate your tomatoes...They become mealy and flavorless. >_< Ick!

I find that if it gets too hot for me, a bucket or small tub of ice in front of a fan helps. Not great for larger rooms, but works for smaller rooms, especially if you just aim the fan at you and let it blow over the ice.

The difference between the right word and the almost right word is the difference between lightning and a lightning bug.

Before you judge a man, walk a mile in his shoes. After that, who cares?... He's a mile away and you've got his shoes.
I keep an old spray bottle with water with a teeeeeeny bit of a fresh and fruity bit of perfume or something in it to spritz on myself with I get too warm. :p It's really refreshing, especially with a fan, or out in a nice breeze~

Even though natural light rocks, I try to keep the shades down on very hot days. I also have some frozen water bottles to keep by me for drinking (as it melts) or placing on my neck, wrists, legs..etc.

I'm also a big fan of ..fans :D They dont take a ton of electricity to run.

I wish I could send you some of our weather right now. It's a surprising 56 degrees overnight.

Also, don't fan yourself with your hand, that makes you hotter =O

ATOMIC POUT!!
i have insulated blackout curtains that keep the heat and sun kinda away from the windows. staying in cool places. and moving as little as possible.
I kind of luck out because my house has AC and my bedroom's in the basement. But I do feel it going to and from school and work because my car doesn't have AC. I've bought things like one of those reflective mats you put in the windshield when you're parked or a solar powered fan you set up in your passenger window to exhaust the heat (damn thing only works when the sun is 100% on the panel). But no matter what I do, it's still like an oven when I have to get into it.

I've often thought that girls who love yaoi were closet lesbians to the same effect that if a guy liked watching two butch hairy women make out.
